Hello there!

My name is Marija, I’m the founder of an online marketplace My Skin Story ( As the name implies there must be a story that drives this online store – let me share it with you.

Ever since birth, I have had hundreds of different allergies, which ultimately affected my skin and developed into eczema. I visited various dermatologists in order to find a solution to my problem. Their advice and prescribed steroids didn’t seem to help and as soon as I hit my teenage years, it started to affect me socially. For example, I’d be shy to go somewhere without make-up, I’d be ‘paranoid’ what people may think about my skin etc.

In terms of an actual skin condition, I had lots of red rashes, which would constantly itch and make everything worse… I was really desperate because my skin looked really bad, there would be no logical explanation of why my skin hurts so much. Moreover, even though my skin was very sore and dry, I couldn’t apply any cream because it would give me even more rashes (I tried over 50 different expensive creams but finally gave up…).

I tried various brands that claimed to help sensitive skin but haven’t had any luck. Three years ago I met a homeopath who helped me enormously. She discovered that my kidneys and liver weren’t functioning well and were full of toxins. She prepared some handmade herbal tablets to clean my body and some natural cream to help me moisturise my skin. After detoxing my body and paying more attention to my liver and kidneys I’m finally happy and self-confident. It’s now been more than 2.5 years without steroids and antibiotics and I couldn’t be happier!

Six months ago I reached the point where I was comfortable to try new creams. Since I haven’t had any eczema reactions (touch wood) I thought it would be a good time to try and find a good moisturiser. I came across No Fuss Skincare after meeting Hannah through my university’s networking. I tried her Manuka Honey moisturiser and amazingly haven’t had any rashes or itching. After trying the moisturiser a few more times my skin quickly fell in love with it! It’s the first official high quality organic and naturally sourced cream that fits my very complicated skin. The moisturiser is an incredibly smooth, light and soft cream. I absolutely love it!

My current skin routine looks very simple: No Fuss Manuka Honey Moisturiser (morning and evening), No Fuss Cleanser every evening and Uoga Uoga facial scrub twice a week and that’s it really. I don’t wear make-up anymore so things got much simpler and my skin feels radiant…

Finally, my tip to everyone who suffers from eczema: stop using steroids. I know that GPs, dermatologists etc. would prescribe you with some ‘good’ steroids and they may seem to help, but the truth is you don’t really solve the problem… It’s like playing hide and seek. Take some time to find the underlying problem and then you won’t need any medicine to be happy.

AN Amblecote businesswoman has achieved international acclaim after her skincare company was named one of the most ethical in the world.

Hannah Pells’ ‘No Fuss Skincare’ has ranked 12 in Good Shopping Guide’s ‘top ethical company’ beating off many larger and well-known companies and high street brands.

Some of the firm’s Hannah finished ahead of included Estee Lauder, Nivea, Avon, Garnier, L’Oreal, Olay and Neutrogena.

The 28-year-old started her company, with support from the Princes Trust and the Birmingham Leadership Foundation, as a way of combining honest social values with good quality products made from natural and organic sources.

In order to challenge the misleading of consumers, Hannah designed her No Fuss Skincare range with simple natural ingredients with clear, honest labelling.

And this accreditation will now give her an unprecedented and independent validation to back up her efforts to stick to her original values.

Hannah said: “I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved here, and the support from customers and the media has been overwhelming.”

As well as the Good Shopping Guide’s seal of approval, Hannah has also been recognised for the second year running by gaining Sublime Magazine’s ‘good brand award’ for 2016.

6 Ingredients You Don't Want in Your Skin Care.

There was once a time when I would walk into a pharmacy or convenience store and nonchalantly scroll the mass of toiletries and skincare products that lined their aisles. Grabbed by captivating buzzwords - I would walk out with that excited “I'm sold” feeling thinking I had bought the next best skincare product which would work wonders for my skin!

Little did I know that many of these products actually contained very little (if any) of the nutritious ingredients that they claimed to have on their packaging, and I was continually disappointed with their outcomes. The growing expense and mistrust in these products continued until I was prompted to look behind the buzz words and their misleading packaging to the ingredients that they really contained.

You Have the Right to KNOW:

Following my research, I was horrified to find that not only did many skincare products contain very little natural ingredients but also contained the following:

A chemical that is used as a preservative in many personal care and skincare products. There are questions being asked as to whether Parabens are in fact linked in part to the rising incidents of breast cancer as they have been found in breast cancer tumours. These chemicals are easily absorbed into our skin which may disrupt our endocrine systems. It is for this reason that Parabens have also been suggested to cause reproductive problems including infertility and growth development disorders in young children.

Mineral Oils including “liquid petroleum”, “paraffin oil” and “white mineral oil” contain contaminants which The World Health Organisation have found has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. Even high grade mineral oil can trap ingredients and block the pores in skin which may increase acne as well as blackheads. Since the mineral oil acts as a physical barrier over skin to reduce moisture loss – it can trap bacteria and therefore increase breakouts and blemishes. These mineral oils do not provide any nutrition to your skin, they sit on the surface of your skin and act as a contaminant.

Are synthetic “softeners” in skincare products. Studies have shown that exposure to Phthalates may have adverse effects on hormones and male fertility and are now widely known to be “endocrine disruptors”. This means that Phthalates are thought to displace and mimic hormones and interrupt their natural production. This has been demonstrated through a multitude of studies which have show disruption in the development of young babies including birth defects and abnormal sexual development.

Silicones give skincare products a “velvety” feel, and act as a waterproof barrier, helping skin to retain moisture. Concerns have arisen however with the possibility that silicones are building up in the environment and are causing “bioaccumulation” which may cause a huge risk for aquatic organisms. This concern has now callen for Environmental activists to urge us to avoid them.

Are a synthetic ingredient which is based on sulphur or petrolatum. There are many varieties of Sulphates which include Sodium Laurl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) being the most common. These chemicals are not only irritants which may aggravate skin by causing itching, dry and redness but are found to break down proteins which can lead to a degenerative effect on cell membranes. They are also found to leave residues in the brain lungs and heart. Petrolatum is also a non-renewable source which has negative impacts on the environment.

Aluminium is a naturally occurring metal which is found in the earths crust and is used in many industries such as construction to products such as fizzy drinks cans. In its ionic and compound forms however - as in skincare products is highly toxic in large doses.

Aluminium in skincare products can create a chemical reaction that block your skins natural sweat glands. Aluminium compounds can therefore cause irritation, may cause contact dermatitis, acne and itching. Aluminium toxicity can lead to damage of the kidneys and nerves as well as cause vitamin D and calcium deficits. Links have also been found to Alzheimer's and breast cancer.

The NO FUSS Solution

I decided to turn all of this on its head – and thought ‘what if companies were honest about what was contained within their products?’ If their marketing terms and descriptions truly stated that their products contained aggravating chemicals causing red and dryness, ineffective pore-clogging petroleum and parabens that have been found in cancerous tumours - would consumers still buy them?

Reading labels on products with chemical-ridden ingredients was overwhelming (especially when ethically perceived high street brands hid them under other labels). As a rule of thumb I found that most natural and organic ingredients could be easily read, understood and were presented clearly - whereas products laden with chemicals had very long, complicated and difficult names that were hidden and tricky to pronounce. It wasn't so complicated after all – and I began to feel more empowered as a customer, which Francis Bacon described as “KNOWledge is power!”

It is my belief that all consumers have the right to really KNOW what is contained within their skincare products through clear and honest marketing, packaging and advertising campaigns. As consumers we have the right to KNOW. And through KNOWing what ingredients are contained within the products we buy, we are able to make healthy choices that work for our skin, the environment and the industries that we choose to support with our pound.

The next time you are in a supermarket, or someone says “It doesn't matter that much” I urge you to take a second to look at the ingredients label to see behind the facade of buzz words and images on packaging to see how many natural ingredients skincare products really contain – I think you'll be surprised at what you find!

We are passionate about the environment, and it is important to us that we minimise the impact of our every day lives on the world around us. Our products are manufactured and bottled locally and packaged by hand.

Not only do we care about the environment, but we care about your skin too. As humans, we're organic in our make up - so putting chemicals onto our skin every day is always going to have unseen effects beyond the impact on the evironment both after use and during manufacture.

For this reason, we have developed our range of products using natural ingredients and making the most of the wonderful ingredients given to us by nature.

By combining ingredients such as coconut extract for its natural SPF or Strawberries for their rejuvinating benefits, we have created a range of skin care products which are not only safe and friendly towards the environment and animals, but they have positive benefits which are far superior to claims made the majority of high street brands.

We feel that cost and ever increasing margins should not impact the quality of the products that you buy, which is why our labels give the full ingredients in a clear and honest way.

In this blog series, we will be talking about the ingredients we use, and why along with some useful information and background into our jouney up to now.

We look forward to hearing from you, so please feel free to comment below or get in touch with your thoughts.
